Maverick (aka Felix) is a sweet potcake who was badly injured in the Bahamas. They don't have any orthopedic surgeons there, and with 3 broken legs, they didn't have any good options. We agreed to take him into FUR in hopes we could help him here in Florida.

After several consultations with orthopedic surgeons, Dr. Darrow at Capital Veterinary Specialists did a very difficult and complicated orthopedic repair. In addition to a badly broken back left leg, Maverick also had a fractured and luxated right hip. He needed a second surgery, a femoral head ostectomy (FHO), to remove the head and neck of the right femur. Maverick's 3rd fractured leg (left front) was stabilizing on its own, and surgery on both back legs would have made it an even more difficult recovery, so we left that one alone.

Maverick's surgery went well, and Heather and Chris Hymer fostered him through his recovery. They carried him up and down the steps to the yard, laid with him by his crate, and took him to too many vet appointments to count. As he recovered, they worked on physical therapy, and they socialized a shy dog. Heather and Chris went above and beyond for Maverick every step of the way.

On top of all that, Maverick was heartworm positive, so when he recovered from his injuries he had to go through heartworm treatment with Dr. Mack at Palm Valley Veterinary Center.

Although he had a rough road, Maverick is now a happy, healthy, bouncy dog, thanks to the incredible dedication of his foster family. Maverick is now completely recovered and he is adopted by the Lamirata family. We're so happy, relieved and excited for this sweet boy.

Thank you to Steph Hickman, Lissa McComb, Laura Kimble and BAARK! in the Bahamas; Del Rojas for flying him to Ft. Lauderdale; Kevin Dykes, for transporting him to Jacksonville; Dr. Darrow and the staff at Capital Vet, and Dr. Mack and the staff at Palm Valley; our Adoption Coordinator Jana; and everyone who donated to help with his surgery.

None of this would have been possible without the dedication and love from Heather and Chris Hymer and their family. Last but not least, thank you to the Lamiratas for welcoming this amazing dog into your family. Thank you all so much!

Sick and injured animals need help fast. Maverick was one of 5 major medical cases we had in a two week period. Of the 5, Maverick was the only one we knew about in advance, and his medical expenses alone were over $5k.

Every donation helps, but Monthly donors give us flexibility to respond immediately when there is an emergency. When there is a hoarding case or a hurricane, a dog with a gunshot wound or a cruelty case, we have to act quickly. We don't have time to do a fundraiser, and wait for those funds to get to us. Your monthly donation can help us save lives again and again.
