We don't know if he was dumped or neglected (or both), but Gizmo came into a rural shelter in horrible condition. He's been scratching himself raw for a very long time, and this sweet little boy was miserable. In addition to his missing fur, he has a terrible skin infection, and his eyes are cloudy and his vision is impaired. We took him to Dr. Bissell at Sandbridge Veterinary Center for a complete checkup and bloodwork. In addition to his other problems, this poor little guy has Ehrlichia.
Sometimes life throws curveballs, and it certainly threw one at us when our foster family unexpectedly withdrew their offer to foster Gizmo. Suddenly we didn't have a place for him to go after his vet appointment. Boarding isn't an option for a dog with so many medical problems, even if we could find a spot during the holidays.
Thankfully, three of our amazing fosters cobbled together a plan. Niki Wescott will foster him when she returns after the holidays, but she was just getting ready to leave town the next day. Niki took Gizmo home overnight (along with Molly, who just had surgery!), and Erin Kupcha took over to temp foster him for the weekend. Julie Martinez will take over when she returns, and she will foster him until Niki gets back.
This time of year is especially tough in rescue, with dogs being dumped left and right, and fosters traveling. Thank you Torena Rowe for transporting him, and thank you Niki, Erin and Julie for tag teaming to give this little guy a safe place to recover.
Thanks to your support, Gizmo is safe with FUR and getting long overdue vet care. Gizmo weighs 11 pounds, and when his hair grows back and he's feeling better, we know he'll be a super handsome little guy.
