Benson was out of time in an overcrowded rural shelter on the grounds of the prison. When we went to meet and network dogs, everyone fell in love with him. As usual, the shelter was completely full with more dogs coming in, and he was in danger.
Thankfully, Jessica Charlton, one of our trusted fosters, was looking for a large breed dog and she offered to foster to adopt. The problem was timing. Jessica couldn't take him for a few days, but the shelter was full and we needed to get him out by Saturday— at the same time we had an adoption event scheduled. Susan Merrill scrambled to come up with a plan, and she came up with a creative solution. Rachel Kor Long, a FUR adopter who volunteers frequently, offered to pick up Benson and bring him to our adoption event at PETCO. Gayle Gallagher, another trusted foster, offered to temp foster him until Jessica could take him.
With the plan in place, Rachel went to Union County to pick up Benson, break him out of jail and bring him to PETCO. Not surprisingly, Benson was filthy after being in an outdoor kennel at the prison. The PETCO staff graciously offered to bathe him and trim his nails, so he left squeaking clean and looking dapper. He's doing amazing with Gayle's dogs, and he'll go to Jessica shortly.
