Birdie Was a Mama Dog Living a Miserable Life on a Chain

Birdie (aka Chanel) is a reminder we try so hard to rescue dogs in the worst situations.

We knew we had to act fast when we received a call to help seven 3 week old pups whose Mom was being aggressive toward them.  Imagine our surprise when we arrived and found mom to be an absolute sweetheart!

Chanel was living a horribly sad life, chained to a fence post, football fields away from her “family.” She had recently given birth to a litter of puppies, who were also living outside in the dirt. Both she and the puppies were living next to a kiddie pool filled with fly larva, slime, and filth meant to be used for their drinking water. She wasn't aggressive, she was starving.  She wasn't able to produce enough milk so the babies wanted what little food she was given and she growled at them.

We took the puppies but promised her we'd be back for her.  Thankfully, a few days later the owner agreed to surrender her and we were able to reunite her with her puppies.  As it turned out, she was the sweetest, most wonderful mother once given enough to eat.

We named her Chanel and reunited her with her babies. Once she was in a safe space and no longer in desperate need of basic sustenance, she was able to be the amazing Mom we knew she could be. Thank you to Courtney Michaele Noble and Kelly MacDade for caring for this family in foster.

Rescue isn't just getting dogs out of bad situations, it’s about finding the best foster environments, best homes, and absolute best adopters. Thank you for helping us care for rescue families like Chanel and pups Prada, Gucci, Dolce, Armani, Versace, Valentino and Luis Vuitton.

The best part of the story though is that this sweet mama found a furever home with one of her pups!  Chanel is now Birdie, and she was even adopted with her puppy Versace, now Bogey. Birdie and Bogie are now living a life that most pups can only dream of with Tom and Lisa Westbrook! These lucky dogs go for golf cart rides, lounge by the pool, and enjoy long evening walks. They are loved and cherished members of the family, and they have the wonderful life all dogs deserve.

Sick and injured animals need help fast. Every donation helps, but Monthly donors give us flexibility to respond immediately when there is an emergency. When there is a hoarding case or a hurricane, a dog with a gunshot wound or a cruelty case, we have to act quickly. We don't have time to do a fundraiser, and wait for those funds to get to us. Your monthly donation can help us save lives again and again.
