The emaciated puppies we just took into FUR are in very bad shape. They came into the shelter at Putnam with several other dogs as part of a neglect/cruelty case. The shelter staff has referred the case to the State Attorney.
In the meantime, the dogs are in very bad shape. Courtney picked them up when she went to the shelter to get Summer, our pregnant mama dog. Valerie Losego scrambled to find fosters for them, and Valerie and her Mom Mercia Noble met Courtney and took them straight to the vet to see Dr. Mack.
Max, the brown and black puppy, is in the worst shape. Dr. Mack ran bloodwork, and he said this is the first time he's seen a dog where every single value is in the red. He already gave Max a transfusion. Without that, he may not have survived the night. They've both had vitamins, both were dewormed again, and they'll get additional transfusions if needed. Both Max and Neo are hospitalized at Palm Valley, where Dr. Mack will monitor them closely.
We named these pups Max and Neo after one of our favorite pet product companies. They have an interesting business model, where they donate one item for every item sold. When you buy a collar or leash, they donate another collar or leash to a rescue. Their list of rescues is growing, and they mail out care packages to rescues every week. Any 501(c)(3) rescue can apply. Several times a year, FUR gets a care package with leashes, collars, slip leads and treats from Max and Neo. We love their products, and equally important, we appreciate them supporting rescues.
These sweet little pups are only 9 weeks old, and their lives so far have been nothing but misery and neglect. Despite that, they are as sweet as can be. We'll do everything we can to save them, and we know they're in great hands with Dr. Mack.
