Adopted... and Dumped

Updated: 6 days ago

A year ago, Comet was a shelter dog, living at Animal Care & Protective Services. She was loved and cared for by the shelter staff and volunteers. But despite everyone's best efforts to support her, shelter life was simply too much for such a sensitive dog.
Then she went to foster with Sarah. Over the next several months, Comet blossomed. She gained weight. She learned how to relax. She learned that hands could be gentle, that beds could be soft, and that she was safe. She became goofy,9 affectionate, trusting, and so incredibly loved.
For the first time in a long time, Comet wasn't just surviving. She was shining. Comet was special to Sarah in a way that is hard to put into words.
Eventually, she was adopted into what was supposed to be her forever home. Everyone hoped the hardest parts of her story were finally behind her - that after such a difficult beginning, Comet had finally found where she belonged.
Seven months later, she was found wandering the streets with an injury that suggested she had been struck in the head. Her adopters were unresponsive.
Somehow, this bright girl had found herself lost again.
Sarah would have given anything to bring Comet back home. But in the months since Comet's adoption, she had opened her home to other foster dogs who needed her, and there simply wasn't space to safely bring Comet back.
Thankfully, even when Comet's world fell apart, there were still people determined to help guide her home.
Emily stepped in as a short-term foster, giving everyone a few precious days to figure out what came next. Then Pablo said yes. He opened his home to Comet long-term and gave her the safety, stability, and love she desperately needed.
It finally felt like maybe the stars were beginning to align for her. But Comet's hardships weren't over yet. When she developed concerning GI symptoms, she was evaluated at Palm Valley and doctors discovered an intestinal blockage caused by a corn cob she had eaten while trying to survive on the streets. During that workup, they found something else - a tumor on her spleen.
After everything she had already survived, this sweet girl was facing another fight. Comet needed emergency surgery to remove the blockage and her spleen. The surgery was successful and Comet was sent home to her loving foster home with Pablo for recovery while we awaited the results of the biopsy of her splenic tumor. Then came the news we had all been praying for: The splenic tumor was benign.
Today, Comet is healed. She is safe. She is happy. And little by little, that beautiful light in her is shining brightly again. Somehow, after everything people and life have put her through, Comet has never stopped loving.
She adores her people. She is sweet, patient, affectionate, and naturally gentle with children. She wants to be close to you, soak up every cuddle and belly rub, and follow her person from room to room simply because being near you is her favorite place to be.
More than anything, Comet wants to be someone's whole world.
She would thrive as your one-and-only, where she can finally have all the love, attention, security, and devotion she has spent so long searching for. Give this girl a soft place to land, and she will give you her entire heart in return.
For a dog named Comet, she has spent far too much of her life waiting for the stars to align. Comets are known for blazing across the sky - bright, beautiful, and impossible to forget. And anyone who has ever loved this girl will tell you her name couldn't be more fitting.
Comet is unforgettable.
She has crossed paths with so many people who have each played parts in her journey. Each one helped carry her a little farther. Each one helped her find her way when she was lost.
But this girl has traveled far enough. Now it's time for the stars to finally align. It's time for someone to look at Comet and know that she isn't just passing through their life. She's the one they've been waiting for.
No more shelters.
No more streets.
No more temporary homes.
No more wondering where she belongs.
This time, Comet deserves to land exactly where she was always meant to be - and stay there forever. 𝗙𝗨𝗥 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵𝗹𝘆 𝗚𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺
